A great combo of theology and actual advice! If you only had room for one parenting book on your shelf, this would be my recommendation. Clarkson does not shy away from controversial topics and always connects discipline to the heart of the matter: shaping your child’s heart to follow God. In this book you’ll learn how Biblical discipline isn’t a check list of to-dos but a “vision of why-tos”. As parents, our primary focus should be on building secure relationships with our children and providing guidance, all while walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Clarkson brings to light that Scripture actually has little to say directly about childhood discipline and raising children. While there are clear principles and perspectives, the Bible does not provide a parenting method. Some individuals who rely on spanking as a way to eliminate foolishness are looking to a formula, or a set of rules to follow, that will lead in heart-change. They begin to rely on the the formula to produce saving faith or sanctification instead of relying on the Lord. This book will help you discipline in light of the grace and freedom we have in Christ. This book also has my favorite quote in regards to those rod verses in Proverbs:
Rather than imitating Solomon’s life, we need to imitate Christ’s.
