Meet Shannon

Hi! I’m Shannon and I’m the Parent Educator at RCD.

My journey began as a volunteer and substitute in my son’s Montessori Toddler classroom. I saw teachers model how to show respect to the child, and yourself, while maintaining boundaries. Instead of just distracting or ignoring big emotions, teachers identified them and then gave the toddler space to move through the emotions in their own time. It was overwhelmingly clear that these teachers viewed children as equals. I don’t mean equal in experience, knowledge, or responsibility, but in that all people, regardless of age, have value and equal claims to dignity and respect. I was blown away by the effect this simple truth had on the adult-child relationship, and in turn, the child’s behavior.

I soon became an assistant teacher and then obtained a MACTE Montessori Infant/Toddler Credential. I then became the Lead Teacher of the very classroom my son started in.

In that role I had the honor of partnering with parents, and I discovered how much I enjoyed working with parents to find solutions to behavioral problems they were having with their children at home.

That promoted me to attend Positive Discipline Parent Educator training and I started hosting online parenting courses in 2021. My classes were fun and interactive, and helped many parents foster cooperation and self-discipline in their children without resorting to blaming, shaming, or spanking.

After a few years of successful online courses, I noticed an alarming pattern: the resistance of Christian brothers and sisters to sign up for a parenting class that taught alternatives to spanking. This inspired me to start a ministry to reach the heart of Christian parents. Classes and resources that not only teach child development and long-term discipline solutions – like my Positive Discipline course – but also dives into what the Bible has to say about parenting. My goal is to provide a safe, judgement free space where believers can openly talk about ‘Biblical’ parenting and share how Christ’s radiant & unconditional love transforms every aspect of life, particularly parenting. My aim is not to impose my own values on parents, but to simply take a fine tooth comb through the reasons behind our parenting choices. And ultimately, to ask the Holy Spirit for discernment.

It brings me so much joy to help parents find respectful solutions that reflect Christ back to their children. Ultimately, my desire is that someday those children would intern develop a deep, personal relationship of their own with Jesus Christ.
