Or buy ✅ if you need help creating a sustainable homeschooling plan that is unhurried and developmentally appropriate. I mean, haven’t we all wondered just how long our child should sit at the desk practicing math and language arts skills?? This “mercifully short book” is for the busy homeschool mom, and it addresses common fears parents have about homeschooling.

We have gotten so concerned with our children “falling behind” that conventional education has started introducing academic concepts sooner and sooner. Wilson shares a fascinating fact that elementary math can be learned in only 8 weeks when we wait until they are ready. Waiting till children are ready allows children to retain their natural curiosity, while avoiding the painful drilling of facts that they’re not developmentally ready for. Wilson says, “The danger is that trying to teach before children are ready can actually impede their learning.”

[Discipleship] requires us to slow down. We need to listen for God’s voice so we can hear his heart for us and our kids, and so we can focus on discipleship.
Education is discipleship.
Discipleship is rooted in relationships.
Relationships take time.

The 4 Hour School Day by Durenda Wilson

I am truly inspired by the unhurried approach Wilson speaks about in this book. She provides practical advice in the brief overviews of each developmental stage: preschool, elementary, middle school, and high school. Additionally, Wilson emphasizes the value of simply living life with our children, following a basic daily routine, and involving them in daily activities – all of which are educational. We are not going to be perfect parents or teachers, but we aren’t called to be. We are called to cling to God’s promises and walk in humble obedience to him. “When our actions and attitudes communicate our belief that God is enough, we prepare our kids for real life by modeling a deep trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness.”
