Children: The Challenge by Rudolf Dreikurs & Vicki Stolz

A parenting classic. This book is the guide for respectful parenting that focuses on inviting cooperation and effective, long-lasting discipline. The book’s fundamental concepts are so powerful that they have been adopted by many experts in the field. Sadly, when I read this book (many, many years ago) I had not yet learned the value of taking notes in the pages of a book. So there are no underlines passages, stared chapters, or circled paragraphs. Please parents, mark up your parenting books- future you will thank me!

One of the book’s foundational concepts is that children are equal to adults. Did you just raise your eyebrows and think, “How can a child be equal to me? I know so much more!” It’s ok if you did. No judgement here. Dreikurs explains that equality does not depend on knowledge, skill, or experience. Why, these attributes do not even indicate equality among adults.

Equality does not mean uniformity! Equality means that people, despite all their individual differences and abilities, have equal claims to dignity and respect.

Children: The Challenge by Rudolf Dreikurs & Vicki Stolz

No individual ability or experience makes someone superior- not their economic status, sex, skin color, wisdom, or age. So how do we live as equals within the family? Dreikurs not only provides the answer, but also suggests that this answer is the solution to the ineffective discipline dilemma that many families face today.
