Another book on the required reading list for my Montessori certification- it quickly became my favorite. Dr. Montessori’s passion for the Lord shines through in this book, making it a refreshing read. Heads up, it’s still challenging to read do to the style of writing and the Italian-to-English translation. But you will walk away from this one knowing the secret to releasing the child’s potential: Purposeful work. Very young children are more interested in doing the work of the house than playing with flashy toys. Give the two-year old a mini mop or a hand held vacuum. Fill a small squirt bottle with water and vinegar and let them clean the windows. This is the big work they see the adults doing in their environment and they want to be a part of it. Once a child completes their purposeful work, you can see a sense of joy, calm, and satisfaction wash over them, creating a cycle worth repeating.
The child too is a worker and a producer. If he cannot take part in the adult’s work, he has his own, a great, important, difficult work indeed – the work of producing man.
