The Absorbent Mind by Maria Montessori

Or Buy if you enjoy reading scientific articles. This classic was one of the many books I had to read to receive my Montessori credential. This book focuses on children between the ages of 0-6 in which Dr. Montessori calls the “absorbent mind” period. In this stage of life children soak in information effortlessly (like a sponge) and have a heightened sensitivity to new information and skills. Through their environment and experiences children absorb life skills and knowledge. The acquisition of language is a prime example of this.

Independence is not a static condition; it is a continuous conquest, and in order to reach not only freedom, but also strength, and the perfecting on one’s powers, it is necessary to follow this path of unremitting toil.

The child does not want to be told what to do or how to do it – he defends himself from such help. Choice and execution are the prerogatives and conquests of a liberated soul.
